Planting Tank

By nebu on in News. Permalink.

I’m still working on getting the 40 gallon planted tank going since July 9th or so. We have the lights and filter. We just need to make the substrate. I’m working on refining dirt to create Mineralized Soil Substrate.

Instructions

We had a hard time finding the right Top Soil without the added crap like tree chunks, Peat Moss, Fertilizers, etc. Finally we found some last week. I also had a hard time sifting it until I bought some replacement screen from Home Depot for $5. I put that over the chicken wire setup and it’s creating the most awesome dirt ever.

I had a hard time finding Dolomite too but finally ordered some online. There’s a 67 page thread just discussing how to do all this. I’ve spent hours and hours with the dirt outside, haha.

I am really looking forward to seeing how this works out for you. I always thought planted tanks were really cool. I bet it will help keep the water clean for the turtles too, have you heard if it slows down the need for water changes or is that stuff all pretty much the same for planted or non-planted tanks? It seems like a mini-Aquaponics setup.
